Winter Time Trees

Many times your trees and landscape can be easily overlooked in the winter months. The days become shorter and with the cooler temperatures generally people don’t spend as much time in their landscapes. Conversely the dormant season can be an excellent time to prune your trees weather they are large deciduous trees, evergreens, or ornamental landscape planted trees. Here are a few reasons why and some information on the basic types of pruning. Remember the first thing anyone should keep in mind when it comes to pruning your trees is to never make a cut without first having a good reason to do so.

From the time trees defoliate or lose their leaves up until their buds start to break is considered the dormant season. One of the first advantages is work can be completed more efficiently due to workers not being slowed down by high temperatures like in the summer. Another factor to take into consideration is the ground can become harder or even frozen allowing equipment to have less impact on your turf. One more benefit is that perennials are dormant allowing workers not to have to disturb them.

By pruning during dormant months trees will be encouraged to put on more new growth in the next growing season. Trees also respond more consistently to dormant pruning. There is less of a likely hood of having to worry about insect infestation from pruning due to many of them being nonexistent at this time and also tree wounds from cuts closing faster. Deciduous trees are not reliant on their foliage in winter for photosynthesis.

Winter months can also be a great time to have arborist access your trees because with the foliage gone it allows them to gain easy visual access into the trees structural frame work potentially having the ability to see any major structural defects from the ground. Having said that it is also easier to evaluate the frame work of a tree seeing what limbs or sections may need to be removed.

Another good point to mention is that for many businesses in the green industry these can be the slower months and their pricing and availability will be reflective of this. The pruning you do now or have done now will benefit your wallet and your trees in the spring.

Why hire a certified arborist to prune and or assess your trees? Many tree companies still implement the use of spikes or gaffes when pruning trees a good arborist knows doing this is very unprofessional and causes many types of damage to trees ascetically and physically. Furthermore a certified arborist should be able to first properly identify your trees and then formulate a plan based on tree safety first of what types of pruning might best be implemented. This will help insure a log lasting safe coexistence between you and your treescape.

"Rennovative Pruning" is the art of bringing shrubs and trees back into scale with the rest of the landscape. Most shrubs benefit from a rejuvenation every few years, and the timing of tree pruning and tree thinning critical. Evergreens and most foundation plants, whose main purpose is foliage, can be severely reduced in scale during late winter, January-February. Once they are brought back to their original size, they will leaf back out as spring arrives. A healthy dose of fertilizer will help in this process.
